Stormwater runoff from roads can have serious environmental impacts. In Maryland, runoff from State Routes 185 and 97 (Connecticut Avenue and Georgia Avenue) is managed by ponds installed as part of an Enhancement-funded project.
The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) received a $2 million TE grant in 2000 to construct channel restoration and habitat improvements in Rock Creek Park. Matching funds came from the County's Water Quality Protection Charge, which is part of each resident's property tax bill. This charge is assessed based on impervious surface coverage for multifamily and commercial properties, and is a flat tax for single family homes and townhomes.
